When the phone rings on a wet Monday morning and a calm, slow voice with a Californian accent asks you politely, as if you’d be doing him an enormous favour, whether you’d be at all interested in a marketing project for Microsoft, it’s hard to resist a degree of skepticism. But that’s what happened, and we tried hard to suppress our excitement.
Nor was this a some small banner ad for a tech site: The project in which we were invited to participate represented a milestone in the development of this gigantic corporation.
Microsoft had identified a rapid movement towards a synthesis of computing and scientific research. This had already enabled new advances spanning genomics and proteomics, earth sciences and climatology, nano-materials, chemistry and physics.
Microsoft’s response was to assemble an international panel of experts who would attempt to predict the evolution of computing in scientific research over the next decade and beyond. Out of these predictions would emerge, hopefully, a new vision and roadmap Microsoft’s role in this crucial sphere.
The forum consisted of a combination of short keynote talks and position statements from scientific, government and industry leaders, followed by round table discussions.
BAAM’s task was essentially a one-off: namely, to design and create the collateral materials for the workshop, providing the means that would enable participants to access and understand every aspect of the event.
Our work had to reflect the monumental importance of this ground-breaking project. The printed elements were to include a comprehensive handbook and a dramatic, engaging poster, along with a wide range of supporting items.
It goes without saying that we were honoured to be invited to participate in such a critical project. Our work was extremely well received and reflected (we are told) the importance of the event global.
For future reference, Microsoft can call us any Monday morning they want.
